BaRupOn Announces Chief Nuclear Officer Opening for SMR/MMR Programs

BaRupOn LLC, a vertically integrated American company operating across energy, healthcare, and infrastructure, is advancing the development and deployment of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) technologies across the United States. Headquartered in Irvine, California, the company is building an integrated nuclear platform focused on delivering safe, reliable, and scalable clean energy while strengthening domestic energy security. BaRupOn

To support this effort, BaRupOn is seeking a Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO)—a senior executive responsible for nuclear safety, operational readiness, and regulatory compliance across all reactor programs.

Role Overview

The CNO will serve as the Company’s highest authority on nuclear safety and operational governance. While the Chief Technology Officer leads reactor design and development, the CNO ensures that all programs are executed within a disciplined safety framework aligned with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements and industry standards.

This is a founding executive role. The CNO will establish BaRupOn’s nuclear safety organization, define governance structures, and act as the final authority on all safety-significant decisions, including the ability to halt operations where necessary.

Key Responsibilities

The CNO will lead the development and continuous strengthening of BaRupOn’s nuclear safety culture across all programs. This includes overseeing the Nuclear Safety Review Committee (NSRC), establishing safety policies, and ensuring independent oversight.

The role carries full responsibility for regulatory compliance, including adherence to 10 CFR Parts 50, 52, and the emerging Part 53 framework. The CNO will oversee all NRC reporting requirements, including Licensee Event Reports (LERs) and notifications under 10 CFR 50.72 and 50.73, while managing regulatory interactions with NRC inspectors and regional offices.

A critical responsibility is establishing and leading the Company’s Corrective Action Program (CAP) in accordance with 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix B, ensuring rigorous issue identification, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.

The CNO will also oversee operational readiness, including pre-startup assessments, licensing milestones, and initial operations. Responsibilities extend to radiation protection, nuclear security, emergency preparedness, industrial safety, and ensuring personnel are properly trained and qualified.

Leadership and Qualifications

The CNO will build and lead a multidisciplinary safety and operations organization and work closely with executive leadership to align safety performance with strategic objectives. The role represents BaRupOn in engagements with the NRC, Department of Energy (DOE), and industry stakeholders.

Candidates should have 15–20 years of experience in the U.S. nuclear industry, with senior leadership experience in safety, operations, or regulatory compliance at a licensed facility. A Master’s or PhD in a relevant field is required.

Deep knowledge of NRC regulations—including 10 CFR Part 50 (Appendix B), Parts 50.72 and 50.73, and familiarity with Parts 52 and 53—is essential. Experience leading a Corrective Action Program and direct NRC interface is required.

Preferred qualifications include an NRC Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license, Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, PMP certification, and experience with SMR, advanced reactors, or DOE programs.

Opportunity

This role requires approximately 20–30% domestic travel, including NRC headquarters, DOE engagements, site visits, and industry conferences.

BaRupOn offers executive-level compensation, equity participation, and comprehensive benefits. The CNO will play a defining role in establishing the safety foundation for one of the most ambitious SMR/MMR programs in the United States.
