BaRupOn LLC is seeking an experienced Lead Reactor Physicist / Core Design Lead to oversee the reactor physics and core design for its Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) programs in the United States. This technical leadership role is crucial to the success of BaRupOn’s nuclear engineering initiatives. The Lead Reactor Physicist will manage the entire lifecycle of reactor core design—from neutronics modeling and fuel assembly optimization to safety analysis integration and NRC regulatory submissions. Working closely with licensing, engineering, and operations teams, this role ensures core designs are safe, efficient, and compliant with all U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements.
The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience in reactor physics and core design for advanced or non-light water reactors, a strong grasp of U.S. nuclear regulatory frameworks, and the ability to lead a growing team of physicists and engineers in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
In this role, the Lead Reactor Physicist will lead the design and optimization of SMR/MMR reactor cores, focusing on fuel assembly configurations, control rod systems, and core loading strategies. They will perform comprehensive reactor physics calculations, including neutronics analysis, burnup modeling, and thermal-hydraulic integration. The role involves developing, validating, and maintaining core simulation models and analytical methods using industry-standard codes. This position also requires evaluating reactor core performance across various operating and accident conditions, ensuring safety margins are met.
The Lead Reactor Physicist will be responsible for ensuring that all core designs comply with NRC regulations, safety limits, and licensing requirements, including parts 50, 52, and the emerging Part 53 framework for advanced reactors. This includes supporting the development of Safety Analysis Reports (SAR), technical specifications, and other regulatory documentation related to core design. The role also requires performing probabilistic risk assessments (PRA) and deterministic safety analyses to support licensing submissions and responding to NRC requests for additional information.
Collaboration is a key aspect of this role. The Lead Reactor Physicist will work closely with the Director of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs, mechanical and structural engineers, and operations teams to integrate physics requirements into overall reactor system designs. They will also guide and mentor a team of junior and mid-level reactor physicists and core design engineers, establishing and maintaining core design standards and validation protocols.
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Reactor Physics, or a related field, with at least 10 years of experience in reactor physics or core design within the U.S. nuclear industry. They should have hands-on experience with SMR, advanced reactor, or Generation IV systems, proficiency with neutronics codes (e.g., MCNP, SCALE), and experience in regulatory submissions.
BaRupOn LLC offers competitive compensation and benefits, with the opportunity to lead one of the most ambitious SMR/MMR programs in the U.S. Join us to work at the forefront of advanced nuclear energy and contribute to a mission-driven company focused on technical excellence and safety culture.
